Vote For The Athletic Gaines-Ruden Report Male And Female Players Of The Week

We have five male and female finalists for the Athletic Gaines-Ruden Report Male and Female Players of the Week.

The votes will run until noon on Thursday. The winners will receive our Player of the Week T-shirts.

Here are the male finalists (all from the FCIAC Wrestling Championships):

Ryan Jack, Danbury Wrestling. Jack won the 126-pound title by defeating unbeaten Chase Parrott of Westhill.

Justin Mastroianni, New Canaan Wrestling. Mastroianni defeated Wilton’s Nick Rende, 3-2, for the 126-pound title.

Brett Nutter, Trumbull Wrestling. Nutter won the 195-pound title with a 3-2 overtime win against Warde’s Joe Gjinaj.

Simon Preston, Ridgefield Wrestling. Preston won the 160-pound title after overcoming a 4-0 deficit to pin Warde’s Izaake Zuckerman, who was unbeaten.

Alex Steele, Fairfield Warde Wrestling. Steele was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 132-pound title over defending State Open champion Kyle Fields.

Here are the female finalists:

Kelly Benson, New Canaan Hockey. Benson finished with three goals and an assist in a 7-1 win over Stamford/Westhill/Staples.

Lauren Moore, Danbury Track. Moore won the 1,600 and the 3,200 at the Class LL championships.

Bridget Paulmann, Ludlowe Basketball. Paulmann finished with 21 points in a win against St. Joseph and 15 in a win over Westhill.

Emily Philippides, Greenwich Track. Philippides won the 1,000 and was part of two winning relays at the Class LL Championships.

Shea van den Broek, Darien Hockey. van den Broek assisted on all three goals in a 3-2 win over Hamden.

Mastroianni beat Rende of Wilton who is a very talented wrestler to win the championship, but he also defeated Jakob Camacho of Danbury–a national champ and #2 nationally ranked wrestler in his division. Were he not a Freshman, he certainly would have won Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament. Justin Mastroianni deserves this–he’s the only champion who beat a national champion to get the gold. No other wrestler’s accomplishments at that tournament comes close.

  2. Justin Mastroianni made the FCIA’S worth watching. An unbelievably talented freshman. Beating Camacho, a senior and second ranked in the country. Unreal! Going on to beat Rende in the finals. WOW. Need I say more…
