WETHERSFIELD — Christine Taylor knew her thumb was broken the moment the ball hit her hand.
The Staples’ senior captain took a rocket off the stick of teammate Ellie Fair midway through the second half of a scoreless tie in today’s CIAC Class L final against Darien. Despite the injury, there was nothing that would have forced her off the field. Ten minutes later Taylor hit a laser of her own that was deflected into the back of the Darien cage by senior forward Abby Najarian for the only score of the game, as the No. 7 Wreckers defeated No. 5 Darien, 1-0, at Cottone Field.
NEW CANAAN — The football teams at New Canaan and Darien are not the only ones capable of producing memorable contests when the archrivals meet. Today’s baseball game provided a conclusive example.
Griffin Arnone’s RBI single capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to give the Rams an 11-10 win over the Blue Wave at chilly Mead Park. Both teams appear to be certainties to make the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Tournament, but the win keeps the Rams in the chase for the No. 1 seed. They entered the day tied for the best record in the league with Ridgefield and Westhill.
