Marinelli, Walsh Add Bond As New Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

There is a bond between Lou Marinelli and Mike Walsh that was forged before they became two of the most successful high school coaches in Connecticut history.

Walsh, the Trinity Catholic boys basketball coach, was late for an FCIAC dinner in 1990 and ended up at an open seat at the New Canaan table, where he engaged in conversation with Marinelli, the Rams’ football coach.

NEW CANAAN — When Natalie Spruck was cut from the volleyball team at the start of her junior year at New Canaan High School, she said the disappointment was handled in a manner consistent with her personality.

“I don’t let things get to me at all,” Spruck said. “I cried for like an hour and then I said I will go talk to Lou tomorrow and I will be fine. I don’t hold grudges easily.”

Darien All-State Lineman Andrew Stueber Gives Verbal Commitment To Michigan

Two seasons ago, during pregame warmups at Greenwich High School, Darien coach Rob Trifone was talking with a group of reporters when he pointed to a player who stood out at the time only due to his size.

“His name is Andrew Steuber,” Trifone said. “Just wait, he is going to be something.”

Trifone turned out to be correct. Steuber, a 6-6, 295-pound tackle, made his way up the ranks, turning that potential into dominance. He caught the attention of approximately 20 schools that offered him scholarships. On Saturday, Steuber gave a verbal commitment to Michigan, exactly a week after participating at the school’s “Big Man Camp.”
