Darien’s Dillon Schoen Earns Rave Reviews For Choices Off Of And Play On The Field

DARIEN — She is among the best players in the history of one of the state’s premier high school programs, with the ability to play at the very highest collegiate level, yet opted to take the road less traveled.

She took up a new sport to stay in shape for another, achieved outstanding success and had what she said was one of the best experiences of her four years at Darien High School.

But what makes Dillon Schoen such a compelling figure is not just her many achievements but the manner in which they were attained.

As we put a wrap on what was an intriguing and memorable season, it seemed worth leading off with the paragraphs one last time — not to save a little writing time but in terms of comparing what we thought to what we now know.

Bridgeport Central? Check. Save for a midseason slip up, the Hilltoppers were perfect, winning their second straight FCIAC title and third state championship under coach Barry McLeod.

Three-loss 2-4 seeds? Greenwich proved to be better than we expected, losing just twice during conference play and reaching the FCIAC final for just the second time and the Class LL semifinals for the first.

Bridgeport Central Was A Team Barry McLeod Could Love — On And Off Court

It was the zenith of Barry McLeod’s 20-year coaching career, surmounting in resonance the FCIAC championship won two weeks ago and his two previous state championships.

Yet the emotion that McLeod felt late Saturday night, after the Bridgeport Central boys basketball team rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit for an improbable and enthralling 76-73 win over Fairfield Prep in the Class LL championship, earned the No. 2 spot in terms of resonance over the weekend.

Topping the poll came a day earlier, after the Hilltoppers concluded their final practice. McLeod intended to gather his players for a speech, but because of a lack of time was never delivered.
