Commentary: 2013 A Year Rich In Memorable Stories And Accomplishments

My annual year-end columns are assured of one thing: if I re-read them days later, I will inevitably realize leaving someone or something off the list.

The athletes, coaches and games that stood out the most resonate in my mind, so this compilation is done without the aid or poring over old stories and strictly off the top of my head.

Here, then, is what I will remember most about 2013:

Commentary: Colon Coming Up Big In Goal For Blue Wave

DARIEN — The music was blaring out of the locker room, and as the door occasionally swung open and a player could be seen doing what appeared to be a dance move, it was readily apparent that the members of the Darien High School hockey team have much better rhythm on ice.

The Blue Wave had afforded themselves the chance to celebrate. Six days after beating Fairfield Prep, the perennial team to beat in the state, Darien came back and took down its biggest rival, and perhaps biggest rival for the FCIAC title, New Canaan, 4-1, in a non-league game Saturday afternoon.

Catching Up With … Trinity Catholic’s Cayleigh Griffin

STAMFORD — Sports have always been a big part of Cayleigh Griffin’s life. As a three-year starter, she was part of two FCIAC championship girls basketball teams at Trinity Catholic. As a senior she was named to the All-Conference volleyball team.

Griffin deliberated pursuing one of the sports at the next level before falling in love with Providence College and deciding she didn’t want to compromise her academic and social experiences, not to mention the ability to take a term abroad in Australia that will be a life-long memory.

But Griffin’s love of sports never wavered.

Making A New Pitch: Aliza Guerrero Ready To Take Her Game To The Next Level

FAIRFIELD — There were few indications that something was amiss, so little that only her coach and one or two of her teammates on the Fairfield Ludlowe softball team knew that Aliza Guerrero was struggling.

She was the same person with the warm smile and inviting personality, a strong hitter and fielder blessed with innate athletic ability, a tireless work ethic and a 5-10 frame to boot.

Second-Chance Points: Contrasts In Start To Boys And Girls Seasons

It has been overstated, but if the FCIAC preseason outlook was condensed into a single sentence, it would be: There is Bridgeport Central and a close pack of everyone else.

The first three days did little to change things. As we begin the second week of the season, just five of 19 teams remain unbeaten. Eight are sitting with 1-1 marks and six are still winless; two of those teams, Norwalk and Brien McMahon, have played just once because of byes.
